Eco Tours in Marathon, FL
Explore the Florida Keys Backcountry by Boat
The Florida Keys backcountry is one of the most beautiful and ecologically rich environments in North America — and most visitors never see it. Always Late Charters takes you off the beaten path and into the shallow flats, mangrove creeks, and remote sandbars that make Marathon one of the most unique destinations in Florida. Captain Lucas Ponzoa grew up exploring these waters and knows every corner of the backcountry around the Middle Keys.
Eco tours depart from Captain Hook's Marina at 11833 Overseas Highway in Marathon, FL. We run 2-hour and 4-hour tours for up to 6 guests aboard our 32-foot SeaVee with twin 300 HP Yamaha engines.
What You'll Experience on a Florida Keys Eco Tour
Every eco tour is different depending on conditions, tides, and season — but here's what you can expect to encounter in the Marathon backcountry:
Dolphins — Bottlenose dolphins are occasionally spotted in the shallow backcountry flats and channels around Marathon. Sightings are a special bonus when they happen — Captain Lucas keeps an eye out and will position the boat for a closer look when conditions allow.
Manatees — The warm, shallow waters of the Florida Keys are prime manatee habitat, especially in cooler months. Spotting a manatee in the wild is a highlight for kids and adults alike.
Sea Turtles — Loggerhead and green sea turtles are regularly seen on the flats and in the channels around Marathon. The Keys are one of the most important sea turtle nesting areas in the country.
Rays — Southern stingrays and eagle rays glide through the clear shallow water on the flats — one of the most graceful sights in the backcountry.
Shore and Wading Birds — Roseate spoonbills, great blue herons, ospreys, frigatebirds, and reddish egrets are all commonly seen on the flats and mangrove shorelines throughout the year.
Seven Mile Bridge — One of the most iconic landmarks in Florida, the Seven Mile Bridge is visible from the water and makes for a memorable photo opportunity. Captain Lucas shares the history of both the old and new bridges as you pass by — a highlight for first-time visitors to the Keys.
Sandbar Stop — Weather and tide permitting, we anchor at a remote sandbar where guests can wade in crystal clear shallow water and take in the backcountry scenery up close. A highlight for families and first-time visitors to the Keys.
Mangrove Ecosystem — Captain Lucas navigates shallow mangrove creeks and points out the incredible biodiversity that makes the mangrove system the foundation of the entire Florida Keys food chain.

Why the Florida Keys Backcountry is Worth Your Time
Most visitors to Marathon spend their time on the ocean side — the reef, the beaches, the Overseas Highway. The backcountry on the Gulf side is a completely different world. Shallow, clear water. Protected flats that stretch for miles. Mangrove islands that have barely changed in centuries. Wildlife that you simply cannot see from the road or from a crowded tour boat.
Captain Lucas has spent his entire life in these waters. He knows which mangrove creeks hold the best wildlife, where the remote sandbars are that most boats never find, and how to read the backcountry so every tour feels different. An eco tour with Always Late isn't a scripted route — it's a genuine exploration of the Keys backcountry with someone who calls it home.
Eco Tour FAQs
Is swimming included on the eco tour?
Weather and tide permitting, we stop at a remote sandbar where guests can wade in shallow water — typically 1 to 3 feet deep. It's a great spot for kids to splash around and take in the backcountry scenery up close. We recommend water shoes or sandals for the sandbar stop.
Will we see dolphins?
Dolphins are occasionally spotted in the Marathon backcountry and it's always a special moment when it happens. However sightings are never guaranteed — wildlife is wild, and conditions vary every trip. Captain Lucas keeps an eye out throughout the tour and will make the most of any wildlife encounter.
Is the eco tour good for young children?
Absolutely — the eco tour is one of the best trips we offer for young children. The boat stays in calm, protected backcountry water the entire time, the pace is relaxed, and there's no fishing gear involved. The sandbar stop is a particular highlight for kids.
What wildlife is most likely to see?
Shore birds, rays, and sea turtles are the most consistently encountered wildlife on our eco tours. Dolphins and manatees are seen regularly but depend on season and conditions. Captain Lucas adjusts every tour based on what's active that day.
What's the best time of year for an eco tour?
Eco tours run year-round in Marathon. Fall and winter (October–March) are excellent for manatee sightings as they move into warmer shallow water. Spring and summer offer the best sandbar conditions and calm backcountry weather. There's something special about the backcountry in every season
Can we see the Seven Mile Bridge from the water?
Yes — the Seven Mile Bridge is visible from the backcountry and is one of the highlights of the tour for many guests.
How many people can come?
Always Late Charters accommodates up to 6 guests on a 32-foot SeaVee powered by twin 300 HP Yamaha engines with a flybridge and full Garmin navigation electronics.
What should we bring?
Sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, water shoes or sandals for the sandbar stop, and a camera. Light clothing you don't mind getting wet is recommended. Everything else is provided.
