Family Fishing Charters in the Florida Keys
The Best Family Fishing Trip out of Marathon, FL
A day on the water with Captain Lucas Ponzoa is one of the best things you can do with your family in the Florida Keys. Born and raised in Marathon, Captain Lucas has spent his entire life fishing these waters — and he knows how to put kids and first-timers on fish fast. No experience needed, no complicated gear, no pressure. Just great fishing, beautiful water, and memories that last a lot longer than a week at a resort.
Family fishing trips depart from Captain Hook's Marina at 11833 Overseas Highway in Marathon, FL. We run half-day and 3/4-day trips for up to 6 guests aboard our 32-foot SeaVee with twin 300 HP Yamaha engines — a stable, comfortable boat that's perfect for families.
Why Families Love Fishing with Always Late Charters
Captain Lucas and the first mate are experienced working with kids and beginners. Here's what makes a family trip with Always Late different:
Fast action — We target reef fish close to shore where the bite is consistent and kids stay engaged from the first drop.
Patient, experienced crew — Captain Lucas grew up teaching people to fish. He's calm, encouraging, and knows how to make first-timers feel confident on the water.
Safe, stable boat — The 32-foot SeaVee is a wide, stable platform that handles comfortably in calm Keys conditions. Plenty of room for kids to move around safely.
Everything included — Rods, reels, bait, tackle, licenses, ice, water, and catch cleaning at the dock. You show up and fish.
Private trips only — No strangers, no shared boats. Every trip is just your family and the Always Late Carters team.
Best Trip Options for Families
Half-Day Reef Fishing (4 hours) — $1,150 The most popular family trip. Close to shore, consistent action, and plenty of time to fill the cooler with snapper and grouper. Perfect for younger kids or anyone who wants a relaxed pace.
3/4-Day Reef Fishing (6 hours) — $1,350 More time on the water and more opportunities to target larger species. Great for families with older kids or anyone who wants a fuller day of fishing.
Half-Day Shark Fishing (4 hours) — $950 One of the most exciting trips for kids. Shallow water shark fishing in the Florida Keys backcountry puts you on fast, visual action that kids absolutely love. Watch the sharks come in, take the bait, and fight hard in crystal clear water.
What Your Family Will Catch
Depending on the trip type and season, your family can expect to catch:
Yellowtail Snapper — Fast, fun, and the most popular reef fish in the Keys. Kids love the nonstop action and they're outstanding table fare.
Mangrove Snapper — Aggressive biters that are perfect for teaching kids how to set the hook and fight a fish.
Black Grouper — A bigger target for older kids and parents who want a real challenge on the reef.
Blacktip Sharks — The perfect family shark trip fish. Acrobatic, hard-fighting, and thrilling to watch leap out of the water on the flats.
Nurse Sharks — Bottom-dwelling sharks that are common on the flats and a great catch for younger kids on their first shark trip.
What's Included on Every Family Trip
Every Always Late family charter includes rods, reels, and kid-appropriate tackle, live bait and lures, Florida fishing licenses for all guests including children, a first mate, ice and water, and catch cleaning and filleting at the dock. Just bring sunscreen, snacks, drinks, and a camera. Light clothing and closed-toe shoes are recommended for kids.
Family Fishing FAQs
How old do kids need to be to go fishing?
There's no minimum age — Captain Lucas has taken kids as young as 4 or 5 on half-day reef trips. For very young children, the half-day reef trip is the best option as it stays close to shore and keeps the pace relaxed.
Do kids need a fishing license?
No — Florida fishing licenses are included for all guests on every trip, including children. You don't need to bring anything.
What if someone gets seasick?
Reef fishing trips stay close to shore in calmer water, which is much easier on guests who are prone to motion sickness. If you have concerns, take non-drowsy motion sickness medication before the trip. Captain Lucas monitors conditions and keeps comfort in mind for every family trip.
Can we keep the fish we catch?
Yes — all legal catch is yours. We clean and fillet everything at the dock before you leave so you're ready to cook dinner that night.
How many people can come?
Always Late Charters accommodates up to 6 guests on a 32-foot SeaVee powered by twin 300 HP Yamaha engines with a flybridge and full Garmin navigation electronics.
